La Vanilleraie

Saint Suzane

Discover the history of vanilla

Located in the heart of an authentic Creole estate, the Domaine du Grand Hazier in Sainte-Suzanne, La Vanilleraie is the result of the meeting between vanilla producers passionate about their profession and the owners of the estate.

La Vanilleraie de Sainte-Suzanne has been awarded many times at the Paris Agricultural Show, for the quality of its vanilla: Gold medal in 2011 and silver medals in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 .

History

Vanilla is part of the Orchid family, it is also the only orchid whose fruit is edible. The vanilla family includes 110 species of which only 3 are used for their aroma.

Origins of vanilla

The most aromatic of these, Vanilla planifolia, originates from Mexico, where it has been used by humans for over 2,000 years. First mixed with incense and used during religious ceremonies, vanilla is then used to flavor a drink made from cocoa beans.

Legend has it that the Aztec Emperor Montézuma welcomed the conquistador Hernan Cortez by offering him chocolate flavored with vanilla, served in gold goblets. Imported into Europe in the middle of the 16th century, vanilla is present at the table of all European courts (Louis XIV is said to be a great vanilla lover).
