The Port

Reunion's economic heart

Located to the west of Reunion, the city of the Port is the smallest municipality of the island with an area of 16.6 km2 for approximately 33,000 inhabitants. It is a coastal point on the border of the possession and separated from St.Paul by the Rivière des Galets, it takes its name from the port of Pointe des Galets.

In 1830, the activity of the sugar cane becomes more and more important and the need to have a port worthy of the name begins to be felt.

For several decades, maritime traffic continued to operate with makeshift installations until the project was completed in 1886. The site attracted a lot of workers and the region began to populate. The city of Port became independent in 1895.

The city center of the Port is surrounded by micro-districts made up of a majority of apartments. There are several industrial and commercial activity zones and residential areas. Thanks to its small size, the town of Port enjoys close access to expressways.
