The Piton des Neiges, the origin of Réunion

With its 3,071 meters above sea level, the Piton des Neiges is the upper summit of Reunion Island. Surrounded by Mafate Circus, Salazie and Cilaos, it is part of the heart of the island. Having emerged from the Indian Ocean more than 3 million years ago, this basalt colossus was active and became extinct 12,000 years ago. Thanks to him, the 2⁄3 of Reunion was born!

You will have the choice between several hiking. The great hike R1 (GRR1) around the Piton des Neiges which has well deserved its title of favorite long-distance hike of the French for the year of 2019. A 56 km loop whose departure and arrival are in the village of Hell- Bourg, one of the communes of Salazie.

 

 

Doesn't the difficulty scare you? Climb to the top of Piton des Neiges ! From Cilaos, tame the steep slopes of the volcano and enjoy the panorama of the cirque below. From Salazie, the trail is more accessible and also longer, but you will be rewarded with the sight of the forest of Cryptomérias, the Creole firs. Otherwise, departure of the Plain of Cafres where the path is easier and the climate cooler.

 

 

It is a protected site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Réunion National Park. Let's take the greatest care to continue to appreciate the oldest of the volcanoes of the intense island.
