Pointe au Sel

Saint Leu

The West Reunion Saltworks

Pointe au Sel is a small salt exploitation located in the town of Saint-Leu west ofReunion Island.  For many years, locals used to go there for salt..

The area is home to a few houses forming the small district of Pointe au Sel. You will find a lime kiln there, as well as an artisanal saltworks operated by the Salt Museum which was created in 2007, after the end of the private exploitation of the artificial salt marshes.

The exploitation knows its age of glory in thehistory of Reunion between 1939 and 1945 during the Second World War, where it became the main source of salt in Réunion, due to  stopping imports of foreign salt.

During this period, production reached nearly 240 tonnes per year, to cover the salt needs of the entire Reunionese population, and fell at the end of the war with the resumption of imports.

Since the advent of social networks, La Pointe au Sel has been the delight of photographers, YouTubers and Instagrammers around the world.
