Iron Hole, the largest waterfall in France
Located in the northeast of Reunion near the Salazie circus, Trou de Fer is one of the most beautiful geological curiosities of the island. Born from a depression in the Piton des Neiges, its chasm sinks to a depth of 300 meters collecting 4 exceptional jumps accumulating 725 meters in height.
Although it is one of the 3 favorite destinations of tourists in Reunion, this great lady does not let herself be conquered so easily. It was not until 1990 that she was first approached thanks to the crew of the famous show Ushuaia. To try to see it several possibilities are available to you, hiking trails, the canyoning or the helicopter.
The hikes of the Bras de Caverne and the 3 belvederes are very long and difficult, count between 6 and 9 hours of walking. Suffice to say that you really have to be trained to try the adventure. There are 2 other hikes a little easier from the Belouve gîte. Via the Trou de Fer trail, you will take a loop of about 2 hours 30 minutes. However, the paths are quite muddy, in rainy weather they can quickly become impassable. The École Normale trail is considered a family hike with its gates and wooden floors. Its landscaped track is as long as the loop, but much more pleasant.
The canyoning will allow you to touch the walls of the famous waterfall with your hands, you will not be able to be closer. But beware, this activity is only accessible to experienced people. The expedition takes place over 2 days with the program walking, swimming, jumping and descents of broken, Bras de Caverne and Trou de fer.
Last possibility more expensive of course, but so magical, helicopter flight. Treat yourself to a first flight on Reunion Island to admire the most beautiful and highest waterfalls in France, the Trou de Fer. A moment that will remain etched in your memory.
