The Pas de Bellecombe, starting point of the active volcano
The Pas de Bellecombe-Jacob, better known under the name of Pas de Bellecombe, is a mountain pass of the Reunion Island located at the foot of Piton de la Fournaise in the south-east of the island. It overcomes part of the Fouqué enclosure, the last circus sculpted by the active volcano and rises to 2,311 meters above sea level.
You will access it by Plain of Cafres where you can stop at the City of the Volcano and find out everything you always wanted to know about volcanism. The other route is via the Plain of Palmists, a boon for you to appreciate the lush and colorful vegetation.
This path will lead you straight to the legendary Plain of Sands and once it has been crossed, you will arrive at the Pas de Bellecombe pass, the most visited place in Réunion. Take a look at its orientation table to enjoy unique points of view and marvel at what the intense island scenery can offer you.
Contemplate the unique picture of the Piton de la Fournaise, the last rampart before its ascent. Take about fifteen minutes and go take a close look at the Formica Leo crater and its shade of orange and red.
If your heart tells you, you can climb Piton de la Fournaise and enter its craters if it is not active at that time. It is still preferable to start this hike early in the morning, so do not hesitate to stay at the lodging of the Volcano.
