The Plain of Palmistes, the heart of the Hauts de l'Est

The Plaine des Palmistes is halfway between the Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise and welcomes within it the forest of Bébour and Bélouve. Located on the heights of the East of the Reunion Island, the Plaine des Palmistes takes its name from the palm kernel tree which was present several centuries ago in abundance in this place of intense island.

You will reach the Plaine des Palmistes by the only transversal road on the island between St. Benedict and Saint Pierre. Region with ideal climate duringsouthern summer, you will find a little freshness there compared to the Reunion coast.

If you decide to go to Reunion in June, there is a good chance that you will be able to attend the Fête des Goyaviers organized by the municipality. The event takes place over 5 days with the program, election of Miss Goyavier, cooking competition, track race and musical evenings.

Some beautiful hiking are offered in the area. The 250-meter-high Biberon waterfall path or the Piton des Songes and its Stations of the Cross which receives Catholic pilgrims from all over Reunion Island every year.

Take a detour through the Tourelles area, home to the headquarters of the Réunion national park. You will be able to follow the “Men, Heights, Plants” route during the visit of their Creole house and the adjacent gardens.
