Presentation of the town of Étang-Salé
At the beginning of the 18th century, the first concessions in the heights were awarded and used for coffee plantations. The sand of the coast is too unstable to be able to exploit it, then in 1873, an inhabitant has the idea of planting some casuarinas to fix the sand thanks to the roots.
The operation is a success and the Water and Forests service decides to plant it all over the coast, making cultivation on these lands possible. It was at the end of the 19th century with the construction of the station that the town developed and became autonomous in 1894.
The city center of Étang-Salé is a few kilometers from the coast with close access to expressways. It is wedged between two districts:
- Étang-Salé-les-Bains to the south near the seafront with its shops, a golf course and an animal park. This urban sector accommodates a large part of apartments while remaining well preserved;
- Étang-Salé-les-Hauts in the north which is developing more and more, but still retains a large majority of houses and a natural environment representative of the high Reunion.
